Resilience & Recovery

Cloud computing is complex and new to many organisations. Microsoft is very aware of this and the concerns that organisations have. For this reason, they have specifically designed their cloud services to maximise reliability and minimise any negative effects if things go wrong.

Built-in resilience and recovery is based on several assumptions – the main one being that at some point either the underlying infrastructure or the processes will fail. No matter how prepared you are, there is always a risk that hardware will fail, humans will make mistakes or software will have bugs. Since the move to cloud computing developers have a very different approach to deal with such occurrences.

We know that once you have moved to the cloud you expect continuous innovation from Microsoft without compromising quality, and this is one of the reasons why Microsoft have built their services and software with resiliency and recoverability in mind.

Fault Zones

Copies of customer data must be separated into different fault zones or as many fault domains as possible to provide failure isolation.

Critical customer data must be monitored to ensure transactions are complete and do not affect each other, data is valid and written data is not lost.

Critical Data

All organisations have critical and non-critical data. Critical data (for example, customer data such as email messages) should be protected at extreme cost. As a design goal, delivered mail messages are always critical, and things such as whether a message has been read are non-critical.

Corruption

Customer data must be protected from corruption. It must be actively scanned or monitored, repairable, and recoverable.

Data Loss

Most data loss results from customer actions, Microsoft 365 allows users to recover items on their own enabling them to restore accidentally deleted items.
