The Organisation

Selig Suffolk Trust is an organisation dedicated to supporting its community through the delivery of essential services and programmes. Staff rely on a dependable technology infrastructure to collaborate, communicate, and access key systems throughout the working day. As technology requirements continue to evolve, maintaining a secure and resilient network environment is essential to ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and supporting future growth.

The Challenge

The organisation required a review of its existing network infrastructure to enhance performance, simplify management, and improve network security. As reliance on digital services increased, it became important to ensure that the network could support both staff and guest users without compromising security or performance.
A key objective was to introduce clear separation between internal and guest network traffic to support DNS filtering policies and strengthen access controls. The existing communications cabinet also required attention to improve power management and cable organisation, helping to create a cleaner and more maintainable environment.
The organisation sought a solution that would provide a reliable internet connection, modern network management capabilities, improved security controls, and a more organised infrastructure capable of supporting ongoing operational requirements.

The Approach

A full network refresh was carried out to modernise the organisation’s connectivity and improve network resilience.
The project began with the installation and configuration of a DrayTek 2763 router alongside a UniFi Gen2 24-Port PoE Managed Switch. These devices provided a solid foundation for network management and future scalability while improving visibility of network activity.
The new Virgin Media Business internet connection was configured on the DrayTek router using Dynamic IP connectivity. Comprehensive testing was completed to ensure stable internet access and confirm correct operation across all connected services.
To improve security and support network policy requirements, separate network segments were created for staff and guest users. This ensured that guest traffic remained isolated from internal business systems while continuing to provide reliable internet access for visitors.
DNSFilter integration requirements were incorporated into the design, allowing the organisation to apply filtering policies effectively across the segregated environments. Extensive testing confirmed that staff and guest networks were fully separated and functioning as intended.
To further improve infrastructure reliability, a six-way surge-protected power strip was installed within the communications cabinet. The cabinet was then reorganised, with cabling tidied and equipment arranged to improve accessibility, airflow, and ease of maintenance.
The completed solution delivered a secure, well-structured, and professionally organised network environment that supports both current operational needs and future requirements.

The Results

The project delivered immediate improvements in network security, reliability, and manageability.
The deployment of modern networking equipment provided a stable platform for internet connectivity and internal communications. Staff benefited from a dependable network environment capable of supporting day-to-day activities with greater consistency and performance.
By separating staff and guest traffic, the organisation significantly improved its security posture. Internal systems are now better protected, while visitors can access internet services without introducing risks to core organisational resources. The network segmentation also supports more effective content filtering and policy management through DNSFilter.
The introduction of managed network infrastructure provides greater visibility and control, making future troubleshooting, maintenance, and expansion considerably easier. This creates a more scalable foundation for ongoing technology development.
The improvements within the communications cabinet enhanced both reliability and operational efficiency. Better cable management, improved organisation, and surge protection reduce potential points of failure while simplifying future support and maintenance activities.
