Metabolic Support
Metabolic Support is the umbrella patient organisation for people living with and affected by Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMDs). They are a UK-based organisation with an international reach, supporting a diverse community affected by around 2,000 different conditions.
Their focus is on helping people live well with their condition today, while also supporting progress for the future. They provide trusted information, tailored resources, individual support and opportunities to connect with others, while using the experiences of their community to help improve care and services.
Their aim is simple: to connect, support and empower everyone affected by an inherited metabolic disorder, helping them live as well as possible with their condition.
Metabolic Support's Challenges
As a charity, they face a number of challenges. One of their current priorities is making sure that financial worries aren’t an additional burden for their community. Benefits and money management are currently among the top three most-accessed areas of their website, highlighting just how much demand there is for financial guidance and support. They’re currently crowdfunding to help them provide more support in this area.
The good news is that donations to their Crowdfunder are being matched by the Aviva Community Fund, up to £250, until 15th September. So, if you’re able to support them, your kindness can go twice as far and help us make a real difference to their community.
Metabolic Support's Achievements
Their community spans the globe, and in 2025 they supported people living in more than 70 countries. This year, they rebranded as Metabolic Support to better reflect the work they do – connecting and empowering people who are often part of small, widely dispersed patient communities.
They have been supporting the wider rare disease community since 1981, helping to drive progress in areas including newborn screening, treatment development and patient advocacy. They were also founding members of EURORDIS and continue to champion the voices of people living with rare and inherited metabolic disorders.
They also run their successful Think Ammonia campaign, raising awareness of hyperammonaemia and helping healthcare professionals recognise the signs. In its first year, the campaign reached 100,000+ people, distributed 600+ posters, engaged 333 healthcare professionals and translated resources into 8 languages.
