About London Bubble Theatre

London Bubble Theatre provides free arts opportunities, supporting people experiencing disadvantage and inequity to fulfil their potential, feel happier, valued and welcome.

They support people aged 6-100 affected by low household income, poor mental health and other complex adversity.

They offer free, high-quality creative activities from their building in Southwark and meeting people where they are, in schools, the youth justice service, older adults’ residential settings, community spaces and outdoors. In 2024-25, 7,874 people took part in their activities attending participatory projects or as audience members.

Using theatre, they respond to health and social issues, empowering members to share their opinions and advocate for their futures. By creating original theatre and sharing it with audiences, members gain confidence that they all have the power to positively steer the narrative of our lives and add value to society.

London Bubble Theatre's Challenges

In recent years, and especially since the pandemic, there have been fundamental changes to the arts and charity climate which are hugely challenging.

The cost of running and maintaining their building premises has increased, meaning that they must dedicate more time to raising these funds, with significant knock-on costs.

The funding landscape is dwindling with a decline in grant funding for core costs while competition has increased – some funders are now only able to support 10% of applications made. Despite their best efforts, their financial forecast for 26-27 leaves them in the dire position of having to draw on almost all tjor reserves.

This increased competition for fewer funds forces us to deliver a scaled-back programme despite hearing from our members that our work is needed more than ever.

London Bubble Theatre's Achievements

Their projects support long-term, systemic change and they are proud to be a consistent presence, well-known and trusted by local schools, housing, community and statutory services.

They hear from their members and partner organisations that their activities provide both creative engagement and a strong sense of community and connection, supporting the development of social and emotional skills. As one housing manager told us:

“Events like yours have a real positive impact on our residents, especially those who are elderly or more vulnerable. Performances created & delivered by older people are incredibly relatable & uplifting; they help reduce isolation, spark conversation & bring a strong sense of community & shared experience.”

London Bubble Theatre are proud of the depth of their connection to their members, demonstrated by the years-long relationship many have with them, often describing their building as being like a second home and their fellow members as chosen family. Members tell London Bubble about the positive impact their consistent presence makes:

“Being part of Bubble as a company has made me feel like it’s possible. Even after drama school, in a career where nothing is ever secure, Bubble has always been a constant and helped me keep developing as a creative.” Young Theatre Maker
