Age UK Lancashire

Charity of the Month

About Age UK Lancashire

Age UK Lancashire is a charity that works with older people and has existed in one form or another since the end of the Second World War. In their current form, Age UK Lancashire was formally constituted in 2010 following the merger of Age Concern and Help the Aged. They provide a range of services and support for people aged 50 and over, as well as their families and carers, who live in Lancashire, Blackpool and North Sefton.

Their Challenges

We are approaching the winter months and Age UK Lancashire are starting to think about Christmas. This can be a difficult time for older members of our population, as the colder weather can have an impact on their health and increases the risk of becoming unwell and having to be admitted to hospital. Alongside this is the loneliness and isolation that some older people can experience during the festive period, both of which can also have a negative impact on health.

This year, they have the additional impact of the cost of living crisis, which will place pressure on the budgets of older people on low incomes, who may become unwell due to not being able to afford to heat their homes properly or eat healthily. Age UK Lancashire are anticipating an increase in demand for theirservices as a result of all these issues.

Their Achievements / Goals

Age UK Lancashire’s Digital inclusion Project has evolved from a donation of 50 tablets at the start of the pandemic through to a fully funded service. This has helped older people keep connected with their families and supported their mental health. Our first recipient of a tablet went on to benefit from our other services. She said that her tablet was “not as good as a hug, but the next best thing!”

Canoe Challenge - 12 miles on the 1st october

On Saturday 1st October 2022, taking place on the Lancaster canal, starting at Bridge House Marina in Garstang, you will canoe (in minimum teams of 2 people) 12 miles to Lancaster, taking in the fantastic scenery as you go. The 12-mile course can take between 3 and 5 hours to complete, making it a real challenge and hugely rewarding once completed. There are no locks along this stretch of the canal so no need to worry about getting out or going through them.

The Age UK Lancashire team will be at checkpoints along the route offering support and encouragement, ensuring your safety and wellbeing at all times. You will be fully supported on the day and all canoes, buoyancy aids and paddles are provided.  We also have a FREE practice session to help you prepare. A suggested kit list is sent out prior to the challenge, so you will be fully prepared and raring to go. You will need to have a minimum of 2 people in your team, or you can enter a team of up to 5 people and split the distance.  If you have more than 5 people we would suggest entering 2 teams.
